England batsman Ben Duckett has withdrawn his name from the IPL 2026 just ahead of the tournament, dealing a major blow to the Delhi team. As a result of this decision, he could face a two-year ban, as he has not cited any medical grounds for his withdrawal.

The Delhi Capitals have suffered a major blow just ahead of the start of IPL 2026. England batsman Ben Duckett has withdrawn his name from the tournament. The Delhi franchise had acquired Duckett at the auction for a base price of ₹2 crore; however, prioritizing his preparations for international cricket, he has taken this decision and opted out of the IPL.

Decision Taken Just 4 Days Before the Tournament

The 19th season of the IPL is set to commence on March 28; yet, just four days prior to its start, Duckett shared his decision on social media. He stated, "Making this decision was extremely difficult for me, but after much deliberation, I have decided to withdraw from the IPL."

Duckett clarified that his primary objective is to play for England. He remarked, "Since childhood, my dream has been to represent England. I want to ensure that I am fully prepared—both mentally and physically—ahead of the upcoming season."

Apology to the Delhi Team and Fans

Duckett also offered his apologies to the Delhi team and its fans regarding the timing of his decision. He expressed that he was excited to play for the team but regretted that his decision might disrupt the team's plans.

Potential Two-Year Ban

Duckett's decision could prove costly for him. According to IPL regulations, players who participate in the auction but subsequently withdraw without a valid medical reason are liable to face a ban. As per IPL rules, players who engage in such conduct can be banned for a period of two years. Consequently, Duckett now faces the looming threat of being barred from participating in the next season as well as future auctions.

Similar Incidents in the Past

A similar incident occurred during the previous season, when England captain Harry Brook withdrew his name shortly after joining the Delhi franchise. As of now, the Delhi team has not yet announced a replacement for Duckett. The team management is now considering new options.
