Justice Surya Kant sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, term will be for 15 months
Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) today. His term as CJI will be for 15 months. He will succeed CJI Bhushan R. Gavai. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Surya Kant.
CJI Bhushan R. Gavai, who had traditionally recommended his name before retirement.
CJI Bhushan R. Gavai had nominated Justice Surya Kant for the post of the next CJI under Section 2 of Article 124 of the Constitution. The President has approved the appointment of Justice Surya Kant as the 53rd CJI of the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal were present at Justice Surya Kant's swearing-in ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Surya Kant was appointed CJI on October 30, 2025, and will hold the post until February 9, 2027.
CJI B.R. Gavai has turned 65, which means he will now retire. Before stepping down as CJI, he continued the tradition of appointing the most senior Supreme Court judge as the next CJI and chose Justice Surya Kant as his successor.
Participated in Many Important Decisions
Justice Surya Kant has been a part of the Supreme Court bench in many important decisions. From the abrogation of Article 370 to the hearing on the SIR in Bihar, Justice Surya Kant has delivered many significant judgments. He ordered the Election Commission to release the list of 6.5 million voters removed during the SIR.
Haryana's First CJI
Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant earned a Master's degree from Kurukshetra University. He has served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
