Kanpur: A shocking case of fraud has come to light from Uttar Pradesh state , where a young man extorted millions of rupees from his prospective wife by posing as an IAS officer. The accused, Nitesh Kumar Pandey, deceived his in-laws by showing them a fake appointment letter in the name of the Principal Secretary and a fake email regarding his posting as the Kanpur District Magistrate.

The Kalyanpur police in Kanpur have arrested and jailed Nitesh Kumar Pandey, the fraudster who claimed to be the city's District Magistrate (DM). To convince his prospective wife and her family, the accused showed them a fake selection letter in the name of the Principal Secretary and a fake email regarding his posting as the Kanpur DM on July 5, 2025. He gradually extorted approximately 71 lakh rupees from the woman in the name of interview and other expenses. When his posting did not materialize for several months, the woman became suspicious and filed a police complaint. After investigation, the police apprehended the accused from Kanpur.

Fake email from Principal Secretary and deception about the DM's chair

The accused Nitesh was introduced to the woman by a relative, Diwakar. Initially, he introduced himself as a student preparing for the civil services, but later, he showed fake documents claiming that he had become an IAS officer.

The situation escalated when he showed his prospective wife a forged letter of posting as the Kanpur DM. The deceived family finalized the marriage, after which Nitesh started extorting large sums of money in the name of "paying bribes to higher authorities."

Threatened to viralize obscene videos when asked for money back

According to DCP SM Qasim Abidi, fraud of 26 lakh rupees has been confirmed so far, while the victim claims to have given a total of 71 lakh rupees. When the woman asked for her money back, the accused revealed his true nature. He threatened the woman, saying that he had some private photos and videos of her, which he would viralize on social media to defame her. Forced by this threat, the victim filed an FIR at Kalyanpur police station.

Entire family and relatives are under investigation

The police are investigating not only Nitesh but also the roles of his brother, sister-in-law, and the intermediary relative Diwakar in this case. The victim has named all of them in her report. The DCP said that the accused had cleverly created fake email IDs and letterheads so that no one would suspect anything. Currently, the police are connecting the dots to find out how many more people this gang has targeted
