Karnataka CM Accuses TN of Creating 'Unnecessary Nuisance' in Cauvery Water Sharing Dispute
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has taken aim at the BJP-led central government, alleging that it has been dragging its feet on granting approval for the construction of the Mekedatu balancing reservoir over the Cauvery River. He also accused neighboring Tamil Nadu of causing "unnecessary nuisance" in this matter. Karnataka has been advocating for the implementation of the Mekedatu project, asserting that it represents the only solution to the Cauvery water dispute between the two states during periods of rainfall scarcity.
Siddaramaiah expressed frustration, stating, "The BJP government at the Centre has not given permission for the Mekedatu project. Tamil Nadu has no reason to oppose the project. It is in our territory, that 177.25 TMC water has been allocated to Tamil Nadu, and we have to release that much water to them in normal years. During distress times, the distress formula should be followed."
Responding to criticism from the BJP regarding the release of Cauvery River water to Tamil Nadu, Siddaramaiah clarified that Karnataka was complying with the orders of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and had a duty to protect the interests of the state's farmers and meet the drinking water needs of several districts, including Mysuru and Bengaluru. He stressed the importance of water for drinking and crop protection, reiterating that the government's actions were in line with the CWMA's directives.
Siddaramaiah mentioned that Tamil Nadu had approached the Supreme Court seeking the release of 24,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily for standing crops. Karnataka, facing water scarcity due to deficient monsoon rains, maintained that it could release water to Tamil Nadu only after considering its own requirements for drinking water and standing crops in the Cauvery basin areas.
He also expressed disappointment that his letter requesting an appointment to lead an all-party delegation had not received a response from the Prime Minister, suggesting that state BJP leaders should take the initiative to secure an appointment.
