The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal on April 9, forecasting rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds through the day.

Cloudy conditions prevailed in the city since morning and are expected to continue. Light to moderate rain with thundershowers may occur at any time during the day.

The maximum temperature in Kolkata is likely to be around 30 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may hover near 21 degrees Celsius. The weather remains relatively comfortable due to persistent cloud cover.

South Bengal under yellow alert

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, rainfall is likely across most districts of South Bengal.

Heavier showers are expected in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Howrah, Kolkata and Nadia.

The IMD said gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph along with lightning are likely at isolated places.

North Bengal to see stronger winds

In North Bengal, rain activity is expected to intensify with higher wind speeds.

Light to moderate rainfall is likely in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar.

Wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 kmph in hilly districts during rainfall. Light to moderate rain is also likely in Malda and Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur.

Commuters face disruption

Thunderstorms linked to Kalbaisakhi conditions have brought relief from heat but caused waterlogging and disruptions for commuters across several areas.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid open areas during lightning activity.
