Will drinking tea make you sick?

While it's not certain that drinking one or two cups of tea a day will cause you to develop illness, if you consistently consume unhealthy foods and aren't very active, drinking tea laden with milk and sugar for extended periods of time and multiple times a day can contribute to health problems like gas, acidity, stomach upset, obesity, diabetes, and even fatty liver.

What Experts Say

Dr. Deepak Bhangale, gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and interventional endoscopist at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Navi Mumbai, recently explained in an Instagram post how your regular milk tea habit could be causing more harm than you realize.

Dangers of Regular Tea

Dr. Deepak says, "People drink tea when they have a headache. They drink tea when they're having trouble digesting food. They also want tea when they're feeling lazy. In our culture, no matter what the problem is, tea somehow becomes the solution."

Tea contains tannins. These are natural compounds that can irritate your stomach. Drinking very strong tea or drinking it on an empty stomach can increase acidity and cause heartburn.

Avoid these things with tea

He adds, "Also, many of us like to eat spicy snacks, biscuits, or fried foods with tea, but this is where the problem becomes even worse. Drinking tea with spicy or oily foods can further irritate the stomach lining and increase acid production, further burdening the digestive system."

He concludes, "You don't need to give up tea, just make it healthier for your stomach.
