The rescue efforts operation at Uttarkashi Slikyara Tunnel has achieved a major breakthrough as a major obstruction in the rescue operation consisting of steel rods has been removed from the path.

In Uttarkashi, prayers are echoing for the 41 workers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel since November 12. The rescue operation is now in its final stage, and a temple near the tunnel's entrance has become a focal point for people offering prayers.

Technical Experts Join the Effort

The rescue operation has received a boost with the arrival of more technical experts. Bhaskar Khulbe, a former advisor to the Prime Minister's Office, is supervising the multi-agency rescue operation. He reported that a significant hurdle, steel rods blocking the rescue pipes, has been successfully removed.

Sharing the progress made, Khulbe said "I am happy to tell you the entire steel that was obstructing the free movement of the pipe inside has now been removed. We are trying to move 6 meters ahead of the 45-metre mark that we have already reached. During drilling last night, an iron metal had come in, due to which the work was stopped. We hope that there will be no more obstructions in our way ahead.

Union Minister General VK Singh (Retd) also reached the site to oversee the operation.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami also reached the site and said ""45 metres of pipeline has been laid through auger machine. The rescue is at its final stages. There are some obstacles,. but I hope that the workers are rescued as early as possible. Post-rescue preparations have been done. Ambulances and Hospitals are ready for their check-up and treatment. PM Modi is taking updates on the rescue every single day. He took the update today as well. Our experts are working day and night to rescue the workers."

International Expert's Perspective

International Tunnelling Expert Arnold Dix, on-site, likened the situation to being at the front door, knocking, and expressed eagerness to see the progress. He said "At the moment, it's like we are there at the front door and we are knocking on it. We know that the guys are there on the other side. I am going to have a look and see what is happening."

Critical Phase of the Rescue Operation at Uttarkashi

The workers have been trapped for 12 days since debris blocked the under-construction tunnel. Rescue teams, including machine and technical experts, are working intensively. About 10 meters of debris separate them from the trapped workers.

Medical Preparedness

A 41-bed hospital at Chinyalisaur's Community Health Centre awaits the trapped workers. Detailed medical examinations are planned upon evacuation.

Ongoing Challenges

The rescue operation faced challenges when the auger machine, drilling through debris, encountered a metal obstruction. Despite this setback, the teams remain committed to progressing through the 2-kilometer length and 8.5-meter height of the trapped area.

Community Support and Precautions

NDRF personnel have provided oxygen cylinders for the ongoing rescue. The entrapment area offers safety with available electricity and water supply, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the well-being of the trapped laborers.
