Abdulla Shahid, the newly appointed leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has asserted that no matter the foreign policy shifts within the Maldives, damaging ties with India is an impossibility. Shahid, a seasoned Maldivian diplomat and former president of the UN General Assembly, emphasized the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and strategic connections binding the two nations.

Geopolitical significance and historical alliances

In a recent interview with Sun Online, the 61-year-old leader highlighted the geographical and historical significance of India as a crucial ally for the Maldives. Despite recent strains in diplomatic relations due to President Mohamed Muizzu's anti-India stance, Shahid underscored India's vital role in historical events, such as the military assistance during the 1988 foreign incursion and immediate aid during crises like the 2004 tsunami and the 2020 Covid pandemic.

Opposition leader denies Indian backing, calls for bilateral cooperation

Shahid, who assumed the top position in the opposition party without an election, dismissed rumors linking his appointment to Indian support. Addressing allegations from Muizzu's administration officials, Shahid criticized the government for using India as a scapegoat to discredit his achievements, urging a focus on fostering collaboration between the two nations. He emphasized the need for the Maldives to explore economic opportunities stemming from India's continuous growth, spanning the last six decades.

The Maldives, located 70 nautical miles from Minicoy in Lakshadweep and strategically positioned in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), holds a pivotal role in India's maritime initiatives, including 'SAGAR' (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the 'Neighbourhood First Policy' of the Narendra Modi government.
