In response to the distressing discovery of photos showing the bodies of two missing students, Hijam Linthoingambi (17) and Phijam Hemjit (20), the Manipur government has taken swift action. The Manipur Chief Minister's Office confirmed that the case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The images had circulated on social media after mobile internet was restored in the violence-stricken state.

The photos depicted the two students at what appeared to be a makeshift jungle camp of an armed group. The Manipur police, in collaboration with central security agencies, are actively investigating the case to determine the circumstances of their disappearance and identify the perpetrators responsible for the student's murder.

The government has also initiated a search operation to apprehend the culprits. In a statement issued on September 25, the government assured the public of swift and decisive action against those involved in the kidnapping and killing of Phijam Hemjit and Hijam Linthoingambi. They are committed to ensuring justice and will impose severe punishment on anyone found responsible for this heinous crime. The government urged the public to exercise restraint and allow the authorities to handle the investigation.

The unrest in Manipur began in May due to a high court order directing the state government to consider including the non-tribal Meitei community in the list of Scheduled Tribes, leading to ethnic clashes. Since May 3, when ethnic violence initially erupted during a 'Tribal Solidarity March,' over 170 people have been killed, and several hundred others have been injured in the state.
