Mehul Choksi's bail plea rejected, no relief from Belgian court

Diamond trader Mehul Choksi, who is absconding in the Rs 13,000 crore loan fraud case from Punjab National Bank, has received a major setback from a Belgian court. The court rejected Mehul's bail plea. A three-judge bench heard the arguments on the bail plea in detail.

What happened during the court hearing?

Mehul Choksi argued in the court that his health is not good. Therefore, he should be granted bail. Mehul said that he wants to live with his family. Mehul told the court that he is ready to accept any condition. I am even ready to wear an anklet with GPS tracking.

Although the Belgian court did not accept his arguments and rejected the bail plea.

Mehul Choksi arrested in Belgium

Mehul Choksi was arrested in Belgium on April 12 (Saturday), 2025. India has sent a formal request to Belgium for Choksi's extradition. Choksi was planning to escape from Belgium on the pretext of treatment in Switzerland when he was arrested.

What are the obstacles in the extradition of Mehul Choksi to India?

Senior advocate Sanjay Hegde said, 'Initial steps have been taken towards his extradition, but this process will be long. I do not think he will be able to be brought to India so soon. An administrative order will be required from the concerned ministry in Belgium, which will be subject to the court order.'
