Meta Launches Twitter Competitor "Threads"
Threads, Meta’s latest
app, could rival Twitter. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced Threads as an
extension of Instagram’s successful photo and video-sharing platform to
encourage positive and creative expression.
Instagram users can
smoothly switch to Threads for real-time updates and public chats. Users can
import their Instagram usernames and verifications and personalise their
Threads profiles by logging in. Screen reader assistance and AI-generated image
descriptions reflect Instagram’s diversity.

For discovery and
engagement, Threads mixes Instagram posts from followed accounts with
recommended material from new contributors. Users can upload 500-character
text, links, images, and 5-minute videos. Threads also let users share posts
to Instagram Stories or other platforms via links, expanding their content’s
reach.
Users can limit who can
mention or comment to their posts and filter certain phrases in thread replies
on the microblogging site. The app includes blocking, restricting, and
reporting profiles.
Meta wants Threads to
be ActivityPub-compatible. ActivityPub-compatible apps can connect. Meta
encourages consumers to control their audiences and transfer their content to
other providers.
Threads let users
explore their communities across different apps on iOS and Android devices in
over 100 countries, including India. Meta also promised improved feed
recommendations and a more sophisticated search function for real-time topic
and trend monitoring.
