Choti Diwali, also known as Naraka Chaturdashi, is the next day of the five-day Diwali festival. Choti Diwali is celebrated one day before Deepawali, so it fell on Saturday, November 11, 2023 this year.

Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated to commemorate the defeat of good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura on this day and saved nearly 16000 gopis.

Also known as Bhoot Chaturdashi in some regions of India

Naraka Chaturdashi is also known as Kali Chaudas, Roop Chaudas, and Bhoot Chaturdashi in some parts of India. In Maharashtra, Naraka Chaturdashi is known as Abhyang Snan. On the same day, some people celebrate Chhoti Diwali and Deepavali. Choti Diwali is celebrated with great enthusiasm and magnificence, with people decorating their homes, lighting earthen lamps, worshiping Lord Krishan, and performing special rituals.

This day mark as the victory of good over evil

On this day, India celebrates the victory of good over evil as the legendary demon king Narakasura was killed by Lord Krishna. Thus, another name for this day is Naraka Chaturdashi.

On this day, worshiping Goddess Kali is thought to bring prosperity and peace to those who practice it, as well as protection from negativity.

How this day is celebrated in different ways ?

On this day, people in Goa burn idols of Narakasura to symbolize the victory over evil and the eradication of ignorance. People in Maharashtra take in Abhyanga Snan, a blend of sesame oil and ubtan.

In West Bengal, the day is known as Bhoot Chaturdashi, and it is celebrated by lighting 14 diyas in remembrance of a family's 14 ancestors.
