Why did the Nepal government ban social media?

On September 4, the Nepal government banned 26 social media platforms including Facebook, X, YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp as these platforms had not registered with the Nepal government. The government had implemented a new law in 2024, under which all social media companies are required to set up local offices for operations in Nepal and it was mandatory to register as taxpayers.

Nepal government banned 26 social media platforms

The government has taken this step due to non-compliance of this rule. The government's argument behind this is that it was necessary to control uncontrolled content on social media such as fake news, provocative content and illegal activities. However, this decision has been widely criticized as it is being considered an attack on freedom of expression.

Many people believe that this ban may be an attempt to suppress the demonstrations of monarchy supporters and anti-government sentiments, which have increased in recent months.

Young people angry with the ban on 26 social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and YouTube by the Nepal government have started a protest in the name of Gen-Z Revolution from September 8.

Let us tell you that on September 4, the government of Prime Minister KP Oli banned 26 social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Reddit and X.

Summary

The government has said that this ban on social media will be lifted only when these companies open their offices in Nepal, register with the government and create a system to prevent disturbances. So far in Nepal, only TikTok, Viber, Nimbuzz, Vitak and Popo Live have registered.
