Nepalis protesting for Hindu Rashtra and Monarchy in Kathmandu clashed with Opposition
On November 23, Thursday, the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu witnessed a large-scale protest demanding Hindu Rastra and the resumption of Monarchy in the country.
What Happened?
Durga Prasai, a businessman, has been responsible for leading the campaign "Nation, Nationality, Religious -Culture and Citizen Rescue" which aims to restore Hindu Kingdom in the country. Nepal followed Monarchy until 2008 after which it adopted democracy.
Prasai was a close ally to the former Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the current Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. The relations between Prasai and Oli have soured in recent times.
Protestors led by Prasai organized a show of power at Balku in the capital. The Youth Wing of the opposition CPM-UML also held a show of Power at Tinkune of Kathmandu as a counter to the Prasai-led show of power.
Both clashed when the youth wing of UML reached Balku during a motorcycle rally. Prasai supporters pelted stones at the Youth Wing members leading to clashes.
Clashes with Police
The supporters of Prasai also clashed with security forces when they pelted stones, water bottles, and bricks at the police. The police claimed that the protestors crossed the designated area for protests and entered the restricted area. It also accused Prasai of inciting the crowd to violence.
The police had to use water cannons and dozens of rounds of tear gas to control the situation.
Prasai has been claiming to topple Nepal's current government and install a Monarchy in the form of Hindu Kindom in the country. Tensions remain in the capital after the clashes.
