Less than 118 patients—compared to 147 in 2022—were treated by the UT administration's medical facilities on Diwali night for burns and eye injuries brought on by popping crackers.

Of them, 92 had burns, most on their hands, and 26 had injuries to their eyes. Three more critically ill patients were transferred to PGIMER.

The GMCH-32 and GMSH-16 emergency rooms as well as the Manimajra, Sector 45, and Sector 22 civil hospitals saw a rise in activity. These departments dealt with both ordinary emergency cases and cracker-related cases.

Last year 582 burn cases were registered

Overall, 580 patients—slightly fewer than 582 last year—were treated for burns, eye injuries, and other medical and surgical conditions.

At PGIMER, three people with thermal burns ranging from 5 to 9% and four more people with burns from crackers exploding in their hands were reported. Following surgery, 2 individuals with hand injuries were released from the hospital.

The remaining patients are under observation, but according to Dr. Atul Prashar, chief of plastic surgery at PGIMER in Chandigarh, they are safe.

Patients with facial burns went for treatment

At the GMCH-32 emergency room, 17 additional patients received treatment for eye injuries. Two of them also had burns on their faces. 12 people reported having burn injuries in addition to this.
