Online Gaming Bill Passed In Lok Sabha: In the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, the deadlock over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list continued on Wednesday as well. At the same time, after the walkout of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, there was a brief discussion on the bill related to the establishment of Indian Institute of Management in Guwahati, Assam. This bill was passed by the Lok Sabha without discussion amid uproar over the issue of voter list revision.

Its purpose is to completely ban online money games and betting and promote e-sports and social games. According to an estimate, every year about 45 crore people lose more than 20 thousand crores rupees by getting trapped in these online money games.

Why did the government bring this bill?

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has tabled the Online Gaming Regulation Bill in the Lok Sabha. He said that digital technology has spread very fast in the last 11 years. He said that new technology has developed and due to this a new identity of the country has also been created. The startup ecosystem has progressed. Ashwini Vaishnav said that technology has many benefits, but one such sector is online gaming, which has become a very important sector.

IT Minister mentioned, that there are three segments in the gaming sector. The first segment is the e-sports segment, in which strategic thinking increases and a person learns to coordinate in a team. Ashwini Vaishnav said that the second segment is online social games.

We all have seen chess, solitaire, sudoku. These are also useful for education and increasing memory. He said that the third segment is online money games, which has become a matter of great concern in society today.

Central government has brought this bill to prevent financial and social losses to people due to online gaming. Its name is Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025.

Government sources said that according to an estimate, due to these games, common people suffer a loss of about Rs 20,000 crore every year. Hundreds of families have been ruined financially due to this addiction. Many even take serious steps like suicide and violence.

3 major parts of the online gaming bill

E-sports: Through this bill, e-sports is being given legal recognition for the first time. Till now there is no legal basis for online sports games in the country.

Online social games: The government has proposed to give legal recognition to online social games. These games are used for the education of common people.

Online money games: There is a proposal to ban such online games in which money transactions take place. There are also provisions for strict action against the companies promoting these games and providing such gaming services.

What will be the punishment for breaking the rules?

Those providing online money gaming services can be jailed for up to three years or fined up to Rs 1 crore.

 Those advertising online money games can be jailed for up to two years or fined up to Rs 50 lakh.

Many families have been ruined financially due to this addiction

The IT Minister said that there are many such families, many such individuals, who get addicted to online money games. Lifelong savings are blown away in the game. He said that fraud and cheating, algorithms are such that it is not known who is playing with whom. Algorithms are opaque algorithms, defeat is certain.

Even take serious steps like suicide and violence

He quoted a media report and said that 32 suicides have happened in Karnataka in 31 months. It has almost been established that money gaming is having a serious impact. Money laundering is happening, terror is being supported. Ashwini Vaishnav said that the World Health Organization has declared online gaming as a new disorder. He said that this bill has two parts. The government wants to promote two of the three segments - e-sports and online social gaming.
