"For every single round fired by Pakistan on India (after the IAF and Army carried out precision strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK on May 7), we retaliated with at least three to four rounds," Lt Gen Sharma said. He accused Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir of directly instigating the terrorists and his army before the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which forced India to launch Operation Sindoor.

Both the officials said that the political directive was clear, to carry out punitive strikes, which cause minimum damage, keep in mind the possibility of the situation deteriorating and create a deterrence message in the mind of the Pakistan Army. For this, the armed forces were given complete operational freedom.

Lieutenant-General Sharma further said that the Pahalgam massacre happened soon after Munir's provocative speech on April 16, in which he referred to the two-nation theory and described Kashmir as Pakistan's jugular vein.
