Orange Alert Issued for 7 TN Districts as Bay of Bengal System Strengthens
A low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, close to the Sri Lankan coast, has strengthened and is now moving toward Tamil Nadu. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chennai, has issued an Orange Alert for seven districts, signalling the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall on Monday.

Likely Movement Forecast
According to the IMD, the system that formed on Sunday morning remains active in the same region. Models suggest a west-northwestward movement in the next 24 hours, bringing widespread rain across several districts of Tamil Nadu.
Rainfall Recorded Overnight
In the 24 hours leading up to Monday morning, Thirparappu in Kanyakumari district recorded the highest rainfall at 6 cm. Sembanarkoil in Mayiladuthurai received 4 cm, while Parangipettai in Cuddalore district reported 3 cm.
Thunderstorms Expected Today
With the system gaining strength, the IMD has predicted moderate thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall across many coastal and interior districts today. Overcast skies and intermittent showers are likely throughout the region.
Tuesday Weather Outlook
On Tuesday, both southern and northern districts may witness similar weather, including thunder and lightning. Heavy spells are expected in several areas as the system continues to influence the monsoon pattern.
Orange Alert Districts
Seven districts — Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur — along with the Karaikal region — have been placed under an Orange Alert for extremely heavy rainfall on Monday.
Safety Advisory Issued
Residents in the alert zones are advised to stay cautious, avoid waterlogged regions, and follow instructions from local authorities. Field teams have been activated to manage rain-related emergencies.
Other Impacted Regions
Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Puducherry are expected to see heavy rainfall today. For Tuesday, heavy showers are likely in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Theni.
Chennai Braces for Rain
Chennai and surrounding suburbs may experience cloudy skies through the day, with some pockets receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall. The city corporation has placed teams on alert to address possible waterlogging and traffic disruptions.

With the northeast monsoon in full swing and conditions favourable for strong precipitation, the IMD continues to closely monitor developments. Authorities urge the public to stay updated with official bulletins and take necessary precautions.
