PM Modi becomes 1st Indian to receive Mauritius’ highest civilian honour
PM Modi Mauritius Visit: Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Tuesday announced to give the country's highest honour 'The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean' to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM Modi has become the first Indian to receive Mauritius' highest honour. Ramgoolam made this announcement at an Indian community event in Port Louis.
PM Modi receives highest honour of Mauritius
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Mauritius today on a two-day state visit, where he was welcomed by Ramgoolam. Both the leaders greeted each other with a warm hug at the airport. The Prime Minister will be the chief guest of Mauritius' 57th National Day celebrations on Wednesday.
A contingent of Indian defence forces along with an Indian Navy warship will participate in the celebrations. Prime Minister Modi will also inaugurate more than 20 projects funded by India.

Apart from this, he will also announce new major infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening democracy in the island nation. PM Modi met Mauritius President Dharambir Gokhool. During this, he has gifted many things to the President of Mauritius, including the water of Sangam from Maha Kumbh and super food Makhana.
Apart from this, the PM has also gifted a Banarasi silk saree to Gokhool's wife Vrinda Gokhool.
'Promoting bilateral relations'
After meeting the President of Mauritius, PM Modi wrote on Instagram, 'Had a very good meeting with President Dharambir Gokhool. The Prime Minister wrote that Mauritius President is well acquainted with India and its culture. Expressed gratitude for inviting me to attend the National Day celebrations of Mauritius. We discussed ways to further promote bilateral relations in various fields.'
In another tweet, the PM said, it is commendable that an Ayurvedic Garden has been built in the State House of Mauritius. I am also happy that the popularity of Ayurveda is increasing in Mauritius. President Dharambir Gokhool and I visited the Ayurvedic Garden, which gave me the opportunity to see it firsthand.
PM Modi arrives in Mauritius after 10 years
PM Modi has visited Mauritius after 10 years. Earlier, PM Modi had visited Mauritius in March 2015. At that time also PM Modi had attended the National Day celebrations as the chief guest. Mauritius and India have had an old relationship. About 70 percent of the total population here is of Indian origin.
