In a recent development, India and Bhutan have opted to postpone Prime Minister Narendra Modi's eagerly anticipated state visit to Thimphu due to adverse weather conditions. The visit, initially slated for March 21-22, was expected to mark Modi's final foreign trip before the upcoming general elections.

According to a statement released by the external affairs ministry on Wednesday, the decision to delay the visit was made jointly due to ongoing inclement weather conditions affecting Paro airport, the primary gateway to Bhutan. The ministry expressed that both nations are actively coordinating through diplomatic channels to determine new dates for the visit.

Modi's trip to Bhutan was anticipated following Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay's recent visit to India from March 14-18. The excursion was intended to reinforce the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between the two neighbouring countries.

During his planned visit, Modi was scheduled to engage in discussions with Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and his predecessor, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, alongside talks with Prime Minister Tobgay. The agenda was set to cover a range of bilateral and regional topics, aiming to strengthen the longstanding partnership between India and Bhutan for the mutual benefit of their citizens.

Notably, Modi had pledged increased support for Bhutan's 13th five-year plan during Tobgay's visit, including considerations for an economic stimulus program. India's commitment to aiding Bhutan's development, particularly in infrastructure and connectivity, underscores the integral role New Delhi plays in funding Bhutan's developmental initiatives.

As both nations navigate the rescheduling of Modi's visit, the delay serves as a reminder of the unpredictable challenges posed by adverse weather conditions in the region. Despite this setback, the enduring friendship and cooperation between India and Bhutan remain steadfast as they strive towards shared goals of progress and prosperity.
