PM Modi, Joe Biden's White House Dinner Gifts
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi was today’s White House guest of President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill
Biden. Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Advisor, and Jake Sullivan, his
American equivalent, joined them for the private dinner.
The Prime Minister
presented President Joe Biden with a sandalwood box made by hand and presented
the First Lady with an environmentally friendly green diamond weighing 7.5
carats as ceremonial presents.

The silver Lord Ganesha
image, diya (oil lamp), and ‘Das Danam’ were presented to Vice President Biden
in a sandalwood box for his 81st birthday in November.
When a person reaches
the age of 80 years and eight months, they are considered “Drishta
Sahasrachandro,” or “the person who experienced one thousand full
moons,” and are so eligible to make offerings represented by the term
“Das Danam.”
The Prime Minister also
presented Joe Biden with a first edition copy of ‘The Ten Principal
Upanishads’. The diamond that was presented to Jill Biden was set in a paper
pulp box known as kar-e-kalamdani.
The Bidens presented PM, Modi, with a handcrafted, antique American book galley.
The first couple also
presented him with an antique American camera, a hardcover volume of American
wildlife photography, and a first edition, signed copy of Robert Frost’s
collected poems.
Wednesday, PM Modi arrived
in Washington after leading a record-setting yoga session at the United Nations
headquarters in New York. Tuesday, he received a rousing welcome in New York
and met with a number of CEOs, intellectuals, and academics.
PM Modi is the third
Indian to be invited for a state visit, which is regarded as the highest form
of diplomatic expression and is designated for the closest allies. A state
visit entails an invitation to the designated residence of the Head of State.
Tomorrow, President Joe
Biden and the first lady will be hosting a separate State Dinner for the Prime
Minister at the White House. Approximately 400 guests are anticipated to
attend.
