In a virtual ceremony, the prime ministers of the two neighboring countries will officially open the Agartala-Akhaura Cross Border Rail Link Project at 11 a.m.
According to the officials, the 15-kilometer rail link—5 km in India and 10 km in Bangladesh—will accelerate cross-border trade and drastically cut down on the amount of time it takes to get from Agartala to Kolkata via Dhaka.
On Monday at 12 p.m., the project went through its trial run. There is one main bridge and three smaller ones.
According to an official, the current train travel time from Agartala to Kolkata is approximately 31 hours; this will be shortened to just 10 hours.
In order to accelerate the project work, the Indian railways had set aside Rs 153.84 crore from its budget.
