Rail Roko Andolan kicked off by farmers of Punjab and Haryana

Farmers in Punjab have started 'Rail Roko Andolan" (Stop Trains protest) by blocking the routes. The farmer groups of Haryana have also joined the protests by farmers of Punjab.

Farmers all over Punjab have taken to protests to demand the compensation for the damaged crops due to heavy rainfall. Parts of the state of Punjab and Haryana faced floods in the monsoon this year which led water logging and streams of water made on the farming land. Crops were damaged by excess water leaving farmers in great losses. s

Farmers groups participating in the protests are Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Bharti Kisan Union (Krantikari), BKU (Ekta Azaad), Azaad Kisan Committee Doaba, BKU (Behramke), BKU (Shaheed Bhagat Singh), and BKU (Chottu Ram).

Major populations of Haryana and Punjab work in the agriculture sector, therefore a large number of population was hit by the floods caused in July and August.

Various associations of farmers have come together to hold protests to put forward their demands and demand action by the state and the central government.

Farmers have sat on a 3 days Rail Roko Andolan starting from September 28 till  September 30. Farmers have blocked several rail routes leading to the cancellation of dozens of trains.  the seventeen tracks blocked by farmers include Moga railway station, Ajitwal and Dagru, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur and Dera Baba Nanak, Jalandhar Cantt, Tarn Taran, Sunam of Sangrur, Nabha of Patiala, Basti Tankanwali and Mallanwala of Firozpur, Rampura Phool of Bhatinda Davidaspura and Majitha of Amritsar, Fazilka, Ahmedgarh of Malerkotla.

What are the demands?

Farmers demand compensation for the destroyed crops due to excess rainfall and floods. Along with that the farmers want the center to form a committee for MSP and demand for the center to take back cases on agitators in the previous protests on Farms Bills.

Farmers wants the center to allocate 50 thousand crores for the damages caused by floods. The associations demand Rs 50 thousand per acre to be given to farmers.

Earlier the government of Haryana led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced a relief of  Rs 15,000 per acre for 100 per cent damage.

The damage caused in Punjab was more than the damage caused in Haryana. As per reports, the government of Punjab led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has credit Rs 119 into the bank account of farmers as a relief.

Framers are the backbone of the country. A major chunk of the population is employed in the agricultural sector and states like Haryana and Punjab are depended are agriculture. Any calamity which harms the crops of farmers directly hit their financial status. Farmers do not get monthly salaries for their work, instead they give time and efforts to their crops every day. The investment goes on for months and seasons, and when a natural calamity like flood hits agriculture lands, all their hard work of months , their investments for irrigation, pesticides, fertilizers and their hopes of earning, comes trembling to ground.
