Though the death of India's famous industrialist Ratan Tata has plunged the country into mourning. After his death, preparations for his last rites have started. Ratan Tata belonged to the Parsi community. However, it has been told that his last rites will be performed in the crematorium according to Hindu traditions.

In the meanwhile, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde has announced that India's 'Ratna' will be given a final farewell with full state honors. At the same time, his last rites will be performed at Worli crematorium at four o'clock this evening. However, the method of last rites in Parsi religion is completely different

How last rites are performed in the Parsi community

All though traditions of last rites in the Parsi community are very old and unique. In this community, the dead body is neither cremated nor buried. Parsis believe that after death the body should be returned to nature. That is why they keep their dead in a special thing called 'Tower of Silence.

What is 'Tower of Silence'?

In the meanwhile, Tower of Silence is an open, round structure, with a pit in the middle. The bodies of the dead are kept in this pit. The birds around eat these bodies and in this way the body is returned to nature. Actually, Parsis believe that the sky, earth and fire are sacred, so the dead body should not be mixed with any of these. This method of the Parsi community is also considered beneficial for the environment because no chemicals or pollution are used in it.

Meanwhile Ratan Tata's body has been brought to his house in Colaba. After this, his body will be kept in Mumbai's National Center for Performing Arts Hall for the last rites. Where common people will be able to see him for the last time from 10 am to 3:30 pm. After the last rites, Ratan Tata's body will be brought to Worli crematorium for cremation.
