Filing audit reports in a short time was a challenge.
The government had previously set September 15, 2025, as the deadline for filing ITRs. This gave auditors only 15 days to file their tax audit reports. Under tax law, many companies, trusts, and business entities are required to submit audit reports by September 30th every year. However, this year, due to time constraints and natural disasters in several regions, preparing the reports within the stipulated time proved difficult.
Around 4 million tax audit reports are filed annually across the country, but by September 23, 2025, only 400,000 had been submitted. Consequently, filing the remaining 3.6 million reports in just a few days was practically impossible.

Appeals Showed Impact
The CBDT stated in its official statement that it received numerous representations from chartered accountant bodies and professional organizations requesting an extension of the deadline. These cited reasons such as time constraints, regional disasters, and workloads from taxpayers and practitioners.
Furthermore, the Jodhpur bench of the Rajasthan High Court, in an interim order, directed the CBDT to extend the deadline for submitting tax audit reports to October 31, 2025.
This order was issued on a petition filed by the Jodhpur Tax Bar Association. Similarly, the Karnataka High Court also extended the deadline for submitting audit reports by one month on a petition filed by the KSCAA (Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association). Considering these appeals and circumstances, the CBDT announced the new deadline under clause (a) of Explanation 2 of Section 139(1) of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
Technical System Fully Functional
The CBDT also clarified that the Income Tax e-filing portal is fully functional and functioning without any technical glitches. According to the Board, 4.02 lakh tax audit reports had been successfully uploaded as of September 24, 2025. More than 60,000 reports were filed on September 24th alone.
Summary
While, more than 75.7 million income tax returns (ITRs) had been filed as of September 23rd, 2025. This data clearly indicates that taxpayers are actively using the e-filing portal and the reporting process is progressing rapidly.
