The age-old ties between Saurashtra and Tamil Nadu.
As the invasion’s out-turn between 600 and 1000 years ago, many people were compelled to relocate from Saurashtra in Gujarat centuries ago and create new settlements in Tamil Nadu’s districts around Madurai, now known as Tamil Saurashtrian. Today, more than 25 lakh people with Saurashtrian ancestry reside in Tamil Nadu, where they uphold their Saurashtrian identity and culture. When Mohammed Ghazni attacked the Somnath temple in 1024 AD, some people fled by sea, and these people are the descendants of those people.

This migration was remarkable in the history of India. On the invitation of the King of Madurai, refugees from Somnath, Prabhas-Patan, and Veraval originally settled in the Vijay Nagar empire in modern-day Maharashtra before moving to Tamil Nadu in 1500 AD. They currently reside in 47 towns, including Thanjavur, Madurai, Kumbakonam, Tiruchirapalli, Salem, and Kumbakonam. Despite the 1,000+ years that have passed, they have kept their Saurastrian identity. Their dwellings’ architecture, wedding rituals, bhajans, yagnas, and other aspects of their culture still reflect Saurashtrian tradition.

10-Day Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam programme in Gujarat.
A series of special events have been planned to let people reconnect with their ancestral homeland and explore topics including industry, handicraft, education, culture, and sports. The remarkable confluence of two very different cultures and heritages is Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam. It intends to promote engagement in cultural exchange between Saurashtra and Tamil Nadu and reunite Tamil-speaking migrants from Saurashtra with their ancestors. Gujarat will host the Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam from April 17–30, 2023.
These events will come about in Gujarat’s Somnath, Dwarka, and the Statue of Unity in Kevadia. The occasion will showcase an exhibition of the handicrafts, handlooms, food, art, and culture of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. The event will embrace discussions and seminars on the Ramayana and Mahabharata that are available in Tamil, Saurashtra, and Gujarati literature, as well as classical dance and music, folk music, concerts, and debates.
