Spanish Police Arrest Three Real Madrid Players for Sharing Video with Minor
Spanish police arrested three youth players from Real Madrid on Thursday, accusing them of distributing a sexual video involving a minor. While the players are not minors themselves, they were later released following a court decision, during which data from their mobile phones was seized, according to a police statement.
These arrests have further amplified concerns about sexism and macho behavior in Spanish soccer, adding to the ongoing allegations of sexual abuse against former soccer federation chief Luis Rubiales. Rubiales faced backlash after kissing Spain's World Cup winner, Jenni Hermoso, on the lips last month, sparking outrage similar to the Me Too movement. He resigned on Sunday after weeks of defying calls for his resignation and is scheduled to appear before a judge on Friday, asserting that the kiss was mutual and consensual.
The arrests took place at the Real Madrid sports complex in Madrid, and a fourth player is under investigation. Among those detained, one is a reserve team player, while two play for the third team.
Real Madrid issued a statement, acknowledging that four youth team players were questioned by police "in connection with a complaint about an alleged release of a private video via WhatsApp."
All three players are suspected of committing a felony known in Spanish criminal law as "revealing secrets of a sexual nature," according to a police spokesperson.
