He is accused of using government money for personal travel while being the President. This matter is related to his wife Prof. Maitree Wickremesinghe's convocation ceremony in London.

76-year-old Wickremesinghe reached the CID office today on Friday morning, where he was called to record his statement. But after questioning, he was taken into custody.

What is the allegation on Wickremesinghe?

The CID says that the former President misused government resources during his visit to London in September 2023. During this, the expenses of his personal security guards were also borne from the government treasury. Actually, in 2023 in September month, Ranil Wickremesinghe went to Havana, Cuba where he attended the G77 conference. While returning from the same trip, he stopped in London and attended his wife's convocation. The CID alleges that this entire trip was made for personal reasons rather than an official program, but the expenses were borne by the state.
