A big study from the University of Southern Denmark looked at data from 573,088 people to understand the connection between hearing loss and dementia. It's the largest study of its kind so far.

More and more people are getting dementia, and it's not just because people are getting older. Lifestyle and hearing also play a role as risk factors.

Previous studies hinted at a link between hearing loss and dementia. Our study is even bigger than those before, and we confirmed that there is a connection between hearing loss and dementia, says Assistant Professor Manuella Lech Cantuaria from the University of Southern Denmark.

The study found that people with hearing loss have up to a 13% higher chance of developing dementia compared to those with normal hearing. This risk is higher, especially for people with severe hearing loss.

The researchers also checked if wearing hearing aids made a difference in the risk. They found that the risk of dementia was 20% higher for those who didn't use hearing aids compared to people with normal hearing. People who used hearing aids had a 6% increased risk of dementia. This suggests that using a hearing aid might help prevent or delay dementia, explains Manuella Lech Cantuaria.
