Supreme Court granted permission just before Diwali
The Supreme Court has taken this decision keeping in mind the protection of the environment and the health of the population. The court stated that firecrackers cause serious harm to people, and therefore, it is important to maintain a balance between the rights of concern and celebration. This directive was issued in light of Arjun Gopal's petition, the serious concerns raised by an amicus curiae in Chief Justice BR Gavai's court, and cases of firecracker smuggling.
The court noted that green firecrackers have improved over the past six years. The GNCTD imposed a complete ban on firecrackers in 2024, but now the Delhi and Central governments have proposed relaxing the ban.
Use only NEERI-certified green firecrackers
The Supreme Court also directed that only NEERI-certified green firecrackers will be permitted for sale and use. QR codes will be mandatory on these firecrackers, and other firecrackers will not be permitted for use. Strict action will be taken against violators.
