T.N. fishermen staged protest demanding release of 7 fishermen arrested by Sri Lanka
On October 14, 27 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy as they trespassed into the Sri Lankan waters while fishing. The fishermen community has come in support of these 27 fishermen to demand the release of these Indians.
Fishermen in large numbers from various unions gathered in front of the post Office in Rameswaram to stage protest and place their demands.
The Sri Lankan Navy arrested 27 fishermen and 5 boast who are residents of Ramanathapuram were reportedly fishing in the Sri Lankan waters off Mannar and near the Delft and Kachchativu islands in Jaffna.
Protestors were protesting for the union government to interfere in the matter. They want the Minister of External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar take up this matter.
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin also urged the external affairs minister of India, on October 16, Monday to take action to release the arrested. The CM urged the minister to use diplomatic steps and get the matter resolved. CM Stalin said that these incidents "have struck fear into the hearts of fishing communities along our coastline".
He further said "They lead to not only the loss of income for the fishermen and their families but also jeopardize the food security of countless individuals who depend on their catch".
So far in 2023, Sri Lankan Navy has seized a total of 22 boats and arrested 137 fishermen.
