Following PM Modi’s
visit to the United States, the Biden administration is expected to ease visa
restrictions for Indian nationals. On Thursday, the State Department is set to
announce that, as part of a pilot programme, certain foreign employees on H-1B
visas from India and other countries would be able to renew their visas without
leaving the country.

According to a Reuter article citing a senior American source, the State Department has already been
making significant efforts to identify new ways of accomplishing change. The
insider stated, “We all recognise that the mobility of our people is a
huge asset to us.”

The United States Department of State spokesperson has refused to provide details on the
types of visas that would be eligible for the pilot launch and when it might be
implemented. The pilot plan will start small and expand over the
following couple of years.

According to the
article, some employees holding L-1 visas (granted to those who are being
transferred to a position in the United States with their current employer)
would participate in the trial programme.

There is a total of
65,000 H-1B visas available for businesses in the United States in search of
skilled foreign workers, with an additional 20,000 reserved for individuals
with higher degrees. The initial duration of these visas is three years, with
an additional three years available for renewal.

As for the H-1B visa
system, 73% of the almost 442,000 H-1B holders in fiscal year 2022 are Indian.
Some of the biggest users of H-1B employees include tech giants like Amazon,
Google, and Meta, as well as Indian firms like Infosys and Tata Consultancy
Services.

India expressed worry
over the trouble Indians have had to get visas to live in the United States.
In March of 2020, the US visa services virtually shut down due to the worldwide
pandemic.
