A very well-known city
for diamond polishing in India that is Surat has now overcome the world’s
largest building office Pentagon of the United States by developing Surat
Diamond Bourse.

The Massive industry
will now be headquartered at the Surat Diamond Bourse, which can accommodate over
65,000 diamond specialists such as cutters, polishers, and merchants.

According to CNN,
the recently launched Surat Diamond Bourse is a 15-storey building across more
than 35 acres of ground.

CNN has also
mentioned that the trading bourses’ architect, the skyscraper has approximately
7.1 million square feet of floor area. As a result, it has surpassed the US
Pentagon as the world’s biggest office building.

It bills itself as
a “one-stop destination” for over 65,000 diamond professionals such as cutters,
polishers, and traders.

The Surat Diamond
Bourse is slated to open in November after four years of development work, which
was hampered in part by Covid-related delays. The ceremonial opening is set for
later this year, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present.

The bourse has around
4700 office spaces, some of which may also be used as tiny diamond-cutting and
polishing enterprises. There are also 131 lifts, as well as food, shopping,
wellness, and conference facilities for the employees.

Mahesh Gadhvi, the
project’s CEO, emphasized the benefits of the Surat Diamond Bourse, emphasizing
how it will spare thousands of people from daily train travel to Mumbai for
business purposes. He called it a “better option” for carrying out diamond
trading activities.

Morphogenesis, an
Indian architecture firm that won an international design competition, oversaw
the development of the Surat Diamond Bourse. The project’s size was decided by
demand, with all offices acquired by diamond firms before the building began.

Its design has the
objective to level the playing field for both large as well as small firms. The
offices are linked by a central corridor, which provides easy access to
services and facilities.

Morphogenesis
co-founder Sonali Rastogi told CNN that the design sought to provide equitable
accessibility for all residents, with no workplace requiring more than seven
minutes to get from any entry gate.

The firm’s study
of the Indian diamond trade also informed the building’s design. Rastogi emphasized
the complex’s nine courtyards, which may serve as informal gathering spaces for
vendors.

These landscaped
sections, reminiscent of old bazaars, recognize the predominance of informal
transactions occurring outside of the office context. Rastogi described the
courtyards as public parks with a variety of activities planned.

Its immediate
surroundings are currently low-rise. However, proposals for a massive
reconstruction known as “Dream City” may alter the terrain. The
ambitious proposal calls for the construction of a smart city on about 700
hectares of land in south Surat, with the new diamond center serving as an
anchor tenant.
