They were alive, kept calling for help, yet why could the Afghan women not be saved?

According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), when a disaster strikes, women and children are more likely to die than men. This truth has been proved once again by the earthquake in Afghanistan.

This earthquake of 6.0 magnitude has taken thousands of lives. So far more than 2200 people have died, including women, children and the elderly. More than 3000 are injured and many are struggling between life and death. But out of these 2200 deaths, many women could have been saved. Because they were still alive, they were breathing, there was hope. The hands buried under the rubble were moving for help, the eyes were begging for life. But Afghanistan's conservative traditions stood in the way of this hope. Such traditions, due to which the relief workers could not touch them. And as a result, even the living women died.

Traditions that became the cause of death

There have been strict restrictions on women in Afghan society for a long time. Here touching by a stranger is considered a crime. When relief workers reached the spot after the earthquake, they had to take permission from the family or society before removing the women. Many lives were lost due to this delay.

Bodies were pulled out with clothes

Local people say that when women were trapped in the debris, relief workers pulled them out with clothes or sheets instead of touching them directly. Many times this process got delayed and women died on the spot. Not only this, discrimination was also seen in the treatment of women.

In Kunar province, male and female patients were kept separately in hospitals to help the victims. Due to the lack of female doctors, many women could not even get proper treatment.

Lack of female doctors and relief workers

Meanwhile there was a huge shortage of female doctors and female workers during the rescue work. On top of that, since the Taliban has been ruling women, the basic rights of women have also been taken away. Strict restrictions have been imposed on them. For example, girls are not allowed to study after class six. Women cannot travel without a male companion. And also covering the face is mandatory in jobs and government places. Women's participation in politics and public life has almost ended.
