Tragic Bus Accident Claims Eight Lives in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris District
In a heart-wrenching incident near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district, a bus carrying 59 passengers, including two drivers, was involved in a catastrophic accident on October 1st,Saturday. This devastating event resulted in the loss of a minimum of eight lives, with numerous others sustaining injuries. The ill-fated bus had been on route from Coonoor to Tenkasi, transporting passengers who were returning home after enjoying a tour to Ooty.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and offered a heartfelt show of support through a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). He conveyed his deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased. Prime Minister Modi's message read, "Pained by the loss of lives due to a bus accident near Coonoor in the Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon. An ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Those injured would be given Rs. 50,000."
Initial reports indicate that the bus lost control while navigating the perilous hairpin bend roads, ultimately resulting in a catastrophic descent into the valley below. Local authorities and rescue teams swiftly responded to the scene to provide immediate assistance. Tragically, eight passengers lost their lives despite being rushed to the hospital for treatment. Several others remain in critical condition, receiving intensive medical care.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin extended his heartfelt condolences to the affected families and announced a financial relief package of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of those who tragically lost their lives.
The precise cause of the accident is currently under investigation, as authorities diligently work to unravel the circumstances surrounding this deeply saddening incident.
