Trump has taken this action on India due to the purchase of Russian oil. He had said a day earlier that India is helping Russia in continuing the Ukraine war by purchasing Russian oil. Because of this, America will take action on India.

Trump has written in today's executive order - The Government of India is importing oil from Russia directly or indirectly. In such a situation, an extra tariff of 25% will be applicable on Indian goods entering the US. This duty will be applicable from 21 days later from today .

Action on India due to the purchase of Russian oil

However, exemption from this tariff will also be given in certain circumstances such as if any goods have already been loaded in the sea and are on the way, or if it has reached the US before a certain date.

Earlier in March 2022, the US had issued an order completely banning the import of Russian oil and related products into its country. Now the Trump administration has found that India is buying that Russian oil, which is giving economic help to Russia. Because of this, now the US has decided to impose this new tariff on India.

Tariff will not be applicable on some Indian goods

In another order issued in April 2025, some special products were already exempted from tariff, those exemptions will continue even now. These goods include semiconductors, smartphones, computers, pharmaceuticals, automotive parts, copper and other metals and minerals.

Trump had threatened to impose 250% tariff on medicines

Yesterday, Trump had threatened to impose 250% tariff on India's pharmaceutical products. Trump had said in an interview to a news channel, that he would initially impose a small tariff on pharmaceuticals, but then increase it to 150% and then 250% in one to one and a half years.

He had said - We want medicines to be made in our country itself. Trump believes that America is dependent on foreign countries for pharma products. This tariff can have a bad effect on the Indian pharma sector.

India was also ready for this

US buys generic medicines, vaccines from India. In 2025, India's pharmaceutical exports to the US were more than $7.5 billion (about Rs 65 thousand crores). According to the US Food and Drug Administration, about 40% of all generic medicines used in the US come from India. India was already prepared According to experts, it is now clear that the US has moved towards a trade war with India. Trump had imposed a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from India last week, which was already considered strict. But according to sources, India was also ready for this.

Summary

Earlier, India had given a befitting reply to Trump and said that you are buying all kinds of things from the same Russia because of which you are targeting us for Russian oil. So this is a kind of hypocrisy of Western countries.
