Trump on Tariff: US President Donald Trump said on Saturday (August 16, 2025) that he may have to consider imposing reciprocal tariffs on countries that are buying oil from Russia in the next two to three weeks. However, he denied the need to do so at the moment.
Trump said in an interview to a news channel, that because of what happened today, I think there is no need to think about this (tariff) right now. Maybe I have to think after two or three weeks. This statement came after the meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Trump has imposed 50% tariff on India
This comment of Trump is directly related to the oil trade between India and Russia and possible tariffs on China. Trump had warned last month that secondary sanctions would be imposed on countries trading with Moscow. He had threatened to impose 100 percent tariff on Russia and gave it 50 days to end the Ukraine war. India is already facing the impact of these steps. Trump had imposed 25 percent tariff on India, which was increased to 50 percent a few days later. Meanwhile half of these tariff have been implemented and the rest will be implemented on August 27 2025.

Warning of Finance Minister
US Finance Minister Scott Bessant told Bloomberg TV that if things do not go well in the Trump-Putin meeting held in Alaska, then secondary tariffs can be increased further on India. He also alleged that India is adopting a stubborn attitude in trade talks with US.
India's stand on Trump's tariff
India has clarified several times that its relations with the US are multi-faceted and comprehensive and trade is just a part of it. The Indian Foreign Ministry had said that relations between the countries should not be seen from a "third party's prism".
Let us tell you that this comment of the US President came on a question related to oil trade between India and Russia and possible tariffs on China. However, Donald Trump clarified that he was talking about retaliatory tariffs, or imposing additional tariffs on those countries which are specifically buying oil from Russia.
