Turkey detains 33 suspected Israel's Mossad spies

Turkish authorities have apprehended 33 individuals over suspicions of engaging in espionage on behalf of Israel's Mossad, according to sources from the security sector.

An investigation, led by the Istanbul prosecutor's Terrorism and Organised Crimes Investigation Bureau, has been initiated, focusing on espionage activities allegedly carried out by the detainees.

The suspects are accused of participating in activities such as reconnaissance, surveillance, assault, and abduction on behalf of Mossad, as reported by Anadolu Agency.

Simultaneous raids were conducted across 57 addresses in eight provinces, resulting in the apprehension of the suspects. Authorities are currently conducting search operations for the remaining 13 suspects.

Tensions between Turkey and Israel

Tensions between Turkey and Israel have escalated in recent weeks. The head of Israel's domestic security agency, Shin Bet, mentioned in an audio recording that they are prepared to counter threats from Hamas in various locations, including Lebanon, Turkey, and Qatar, reported Al Jazeera.

Erdogan's Warning

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned Israel of "serious consequences" if it proceeds with the threat to attack Hamas officials on Turkish soil.

Despite moves towards normalizing ties in 2022, strained relations between Turkey and Israel intensified during the Israel-Hamas conflict. Turkey emerged as one of the strongest critics of Israel's military actions in Gaza.

Diplomatic ties, initially resumed, suffered setbacks as Israel withdrew its diplomats from Turkey over security concerns. Turkey reciprocated by pulling its ambassador from Israel.

Netanyahu's Response

Responding to Erdogan's remarks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Erdogan of "committing genocide" against Kurds and imprisoning journalists opposing his regime. He asserted that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is fighting to eliminate Hamas-ISIS, which Erdogan has praised.

Netanyahu emphasized that the IDF is the "most moral army" globally and condemned Erdogan's criticism as hypocritical.
