Twist in Justice Yashwant Verma case, Fire department- no cash found, while extinguishing fire

Media reports claimed that a huge amount of cash was found after the fire in Justice Yashwant Verma's bungalow.

A big update has come in the case of cash being found at the official residence of Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Verma in Lutyens Delhi. The reason is the fire department has completely rejected the claims of finding cash. Delhi Fire Service (DFS) chief Atul Garg on Friday rejected these claims and clarified that "no cash was found by the firefighters while extinguishing the fire."

While in media reports it was reported that a huge amount of cash was found after the fire in Justice Yashwant Verma's bungalow.

Meanwhile Justice Verma's transfer from Delhi High Court to Allahabad High Court was also added to this.

However, the Supreme Court issued a statement calling these two cases separate.

According to fire officer Garg, a fire was reported at Justice Verma's residence in Lutyens Delhi at 11:35 pm on March 14, after which two fire, engines were immediately sent to the spot. The firefighters reached the spot by 11:43 pm.

The fire broke out in a storeroom where stationery and household items were kept. He said that the fire was brought under control in 15 minutes and there were no casualties.

According to news agency, fire officer Atul Garg said, "Immediately after extinguishing the fire, we informed the police about the incident. After that our team left from there. Our firefighters did not find any cash while extinguishing the fire."

Chief Justice of Delhi HC begins investigation

The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna has started a preliminary inquiry into the allegations of cash being found, under which a preliminary report has been sought from the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court.

The Chief Justice of Delhi High Court will submit his investigation report to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) today (21 March 2025). After this, this report will be reviewed, and further necessary action will be taken.

Investigation and transfer are different: Supreme Court

An official statement was issued by the Supreme Court. In this, the Supreme Court said that the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court had first started the investigation of the case related to Justice Yashwant Verma. The Supreme Court also clarified that many types of rumors and wrong information are being spread in this case, which need to be avoided.

The Supreme Court made it clear that the proposal to transfer Justice Yashwant Verma is completely separate and independent from the in-house investigation process. The Supreme Court underlined the fact that Justice Yashwant Verma is currently the second senior-most judge in the Delhi High Court and a member of the Collegium. But after being transferred to Allahabad High Court, his seniority will decrease to ninth.

Career of Justice Yashwant Verma

56-year-old Justice Yashwant Verma registered as an advocate in 1992. He was appointed as Additional Judge of Allahabad High Court on 13 October 2014 and was sworn in as permanent judge on 1 February 2016. He was born on 6 January 1969 in Allahabad. He did his B.Com (Hons) from Hansraj College, University of Delhi and then obtained LLB degree from Rewa University, Madhya Pradesh.

Summary 

He practiced in Allahabad High Court on constitutional, labour and industrial laws as well as corporate law, taxation and related laws. He was also Special Counsel of the High Court since 2006 and Principal Standing Counsel for the Government of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2013. He was designated as Senior Advocate in 2013.
