Under-construction bridge collapsed in Mizoram, 17 killed
On Wednesday, August 23rd, an under-constructed bridge collapsed near the Sairang/Sihmui railway station around 11 am. The bridge was constructed 21 km away from the capital, Aizawl. Situated between the railway stations of Bairabi and Sairang, the bridge was built over the Karung River. Reports indicate that around 40 workers were present at the site.

The rescue operation was carried out by the Sairang branch of the Young Mizo Association. The collapsed bridge was part of an Indian Railways project aimed at connecting all the Northeast state capitals. The bridge's intended route was to link Aizawl with the national rail network.
According to sources, the height of the bridge pier was 104 meters. The bridge was a Road- rail bridge.
The tragedy was informed by the CM of Mizoram Zoramthanga through X(Twitter) by saying "Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations".
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and announced ex- gratia. He announced Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for those who lost their life in the incident and Rs. 50,000 for the injured.
