Update on India's moon mission from ISRO: "Failure-based design in Chandrayaan-3."
S Somanath, the head of the Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO), stated on Monday that Chandrayaan-3 was designed with a
failure-based approach.
He said that, if you wanted to explain what went
wrong with Chandrayaan-2 in a summary, you could say that the spacecraft’s
ability to manage parameter variation or dispersion was severely constrained.

Therefore, we simply expanded it further this time. Consider the prospective
failure causes. Chandrayaan-3 employs a design based on failure as opposed to
Chandrayaan-2’s design based on success. Our strategy focuses on what could go
wrong and how to avoid it.
The Chandrayaan-3 mission will be launched on 14
July at 2.35 p.m., with a soft impact on the lunar surface expected on 23 or 24
August. Chandrayaan-3 aims to show its ability of landing and roving on the
surface of the moon.
The Launch Vehicle Mark-III will send the
Chandrayaan-3 spaceship into space. The Launch Vehicle Mark-III is a
combination of a propulsion system, a lander, and a rover.
The Chandrayaan-3 project has scientific tools to
study the thermophysical properties of the lunar seismicity, lunar regolith,
lunar surface plasma environment, and elemental composition.
The lander will be able to soft-land in a certain
place on the moon and send out the rover, which will carry out a chemical study
of the moon’s surface as it moves around.
ISRO has asked people to come to Sriharikota to
watch the launch of Chandrayaan-3 from the launch view area.
