US elections: Indians shine... Besides Mamdani, these other candidates also won

Indian-origin Muslim Democrat Zohran Mamdani won a historic victory in the New York mayoral election, becoming America's first South Asian Muslim mayor.

US elections: Indian-origin Muslim Democrat Zohran Mamdani (34) achieved a historic victory in the New York mayoral election. He defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, making history in America's wealthiest city. He also became the first South Asian and Muslim mayor of America's largest city.

Meanwhile, Indian-origin Ghazala Hashmi became Virginia's Lieutenant Governor, and JJ Singh won a Virginia House seat.

Zohran Mamdani won a historic victory

Zohran Mamdani received 948,202 votes (50.6 percent), representing 83 percent of the votes cast. He had been the frontrunner in the NYC mayoral election for several months. Andrew Cuomo ran as an independent candidate and received Trump's endorsement the day before the election. Despite this, Mamdani won easily.

 

Cuomo received 776,547 votes (41.3 percent), while Sliwa received 137,030. The New York City Board of Elections reported that two million votes were cast for the first time since 1969, with Manhattan accounting for 444,439, followed by the Bronx (187,399), Brooklyn (571,857), Queens (421,176), and Staten Island (123,827). Mamdani defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor and was declared the winner in June of this year.

Who is Zohran Mamdani?

Born in Kampala, Uganda, Zohran Mamdani moved to New York City at the age of seven and later became a U.S. citizen. His mother, Mira Nair, is a renowned Indian-American filmmaker, and his father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a professor at Columbia University.

Indian-American Ghazala Hashmi Wins

Indian-American Democrat Ghazala Hashmi has won the election for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, defeating Republican John Reed. Hashmi is the first Muslim and the first South Asian American to serve in the Virginia Senate, representing the 15th Senatorial District. Hashmi's victory means a special election will be held for her Senate seat.

JJ Singh Wins

Indian-American JJ Singh contested and won Virginia House of Delegates District 26, a district primarily located in Northern Virginia.

JJ Singh was born in Northern Virginia to a Punjabi Sikh family and grew up in Fairfax Station. His father, Amar Jeet Singh, was born in Faisalabad, Punjab province, British India (now Pakistan), and moved to Haryana, India, after the partition of India.
