Uttar Pradesh Sees Protests After Khamenei’s Death, Shops Shut in Old Lucknow

Mourning was observed in parts of Old Lucknow after the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Three days of mourning were announced in the city, with the second day observed on Monday. Most shops in areas such as Chowk, Nakkhas, Akbari Gate and around Chhota Imambara and Bada Imambara remained closed. Markets wore a deserted look as residents expressed grief.

Outside the Chhota Imambara complex, Israeli and American flags were placed on the ground and people were seen walking over them as a mark of protest. Local reports said markets are expected to reopen after the final day of mourning.

Prayagraj: Procession and Effigy Burning

In Prayagraj’s Dariyabad area, members of the Shia community held a protest march following reports of Khamenei’s death in a US bombing.

Women and children joined the procession. Protesters raised slogans against the United States and Israel. An effigy of US President Donald Trump was burned and beaten with slippers during the demonstration. Participants also paid tribute to those killed in the ongoing conflict.

Barabanki: Candlelight Vigil and Majlis

In Barabanki, members of the Shia community gathered to mourn what they described as the martyrdom of their religious leader.

Protesters marched with photographs in their hands. A candlelight vigil was organised and a majlis was held to express grief and solidarity. People of all age groups, including women and children, took part in the gatherings.

Aligarh: Funeral Prayer at AMU

At Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh, a funeral prayer was offered in memory of Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei.

Following the prayer at the university’s Jama Masjid, a candlelight vigil was held from the mosque to the Bab e Syed Gate. Participants paid tribute and expressed condolences during the march.

Protests and mourning meetings were also reported from other districts, reflecting strong reactions in parts of Uttar Pradesh to developments in West Asia.
