Over the past two decades, during the Vibrant Gujarat journey that began in 2003, the state's public healthcare infrastructure has grown by 30%. This robust system is further supported by a very strong private medical and healthcare sector. Specialist care in the public sector has improved tremendously with the establishment of 40 medical college hospitals (from only 12 in 2003), 6900 medical seats (previously 1525), a 25-fold increase in dialysis units and a three-fold increase in chemotherapy centres. This has resulted in over 60% reduction in infant and maternal mortality.

Along with this, since the year 2003, the state has also seen a 2.5-fold increase in pharmaceuticals manufacturing and selling units and a 9-fold increase in USFDA approved units, thereby increasing Gujarat's share of pharma export business by 3-fold. With an estimated turnover of ₹1,46,606 crore and an increase of 8.4 times over the 2003 estimate, the state is de facto recognized as the pharma capital of the nation.

The state of Gujarat not only offers world-class healthcare services, but also has strong allied sectors, such as AYUSH and wellness, thriving pharmaceutical, diagnostics and medical devices sectors, rehabilitation services and a focus on medical research and development (Medical R&D). is coming. All these together ensure that the healthcare ecosystem is holistic and complete.
