Waqf Amendment Bill: 14 proposals of government passed; Opposition gets a shock

Waqf Amendment Bill: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) of Parliament has approved the changes in the Waqf Bill. In August last year 2024, the bill was introduced in Parliament with 14 changes. Earlier, BJP MP and JPC President Jagdambika Pal had proposed 44 changes in the Waqf Bill. It was rejected by the opposition.

The Parliamentary Committee on Monday accepted all the amendments proposed by the NDA members. At the same time, every change introduced by the opposition members was rejected.

Committee Chairman Jagdambika Pal said that the amendments adopted by the committee will make the law better and more effective. However, opposition MPs condemned the proceedings of the meeting and accused Pal of distorting the democratic process.

Opposition expressed displeasure

The Joint Committee of Parliament met on the Waqf Bill on Monday 27 January 2025 at 11 am. During this, every clause of the bill was discussed. JPC Chairman Jagadambika Pal says that the amendments adopted by the committee will make the law better and more effective.

At the same time, opposition MPs have condemned the opposition's action regarding the bill. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee accused the JPC chairman of ruining the democratic process and said that none of his views were heard in the meeting.

He said, 'They did not let us speak. No rules or procedures have been followed. We had been asked for documents and representation. We were not given all that.'

Opposition did not want to let the report be presented'

Regarding the amendment, JPC Chairman Jagadambika Pal said, 'I had allowed all the members of the JPC to put forward their views. When I tried to answer their questions, they created a lot of ruckuses by sloganeering, making noise and using unparliamentary words.'

The JPC chairman said that the opposition MPs were not allowing the meeting to proceed. They tried to weaken democracy. Accusing the opposition, he said that they did not want to let the report be presented. There was a ruckus in the last meeting

Let us tell you that there was a lot of ruckuses in the JPC meeting held on 24 January 2025. During this, 10 opposition MPs were also suspended. After this, a letter was written to Lok Sabha member Om Birla on behalf of the opposition MPs, demanding an impartial inquiry into the matter. The opposition claimed that they were not given enough time to amend the changes proposed in the draft.

At the same time, the BJP was accused that in view of the Delhi elections, the party is giving delay in presenting the report on the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament soon.
