What Do The Dalits Of Bihar Want: Ashok Bharti, President of the National Confederation of Dalit and Tribal Organizations (NACDAOR), released a report on Wednesday to assess the plight of Dalits in Bihar. He titled the report "What Dalits Want." Releasing the report, he stated that Dalits in Bihar are marginalized and eager for change. He said that Dalits in Bihar are angry with Nitish Kumar and may turn away from him in this election.

 They are unhappy with the current situation and may distance themselves from Nitish Kumar. The report highlights how Dalits in Bihar are marginalized in education, health, and employment.

What do the Dalits of Bihar want?

According to the report, Scheduled Castes (SCs) constitute 19.65% of the total population in Bihar, but due to persistent inequalities, they are not receiving their fair share. Releasing the report, Bharti said that whether it is education, health, or employment, Dalits in Bihar are completely marginalized and are protesting this current situation.

Dalits are moving away from Nitish Kumar

The report shows that Dalits will play a key role in this election. Bharti said that Dalits in Bihar are impatient and moving towards change. He said, "However, I cannot say which way they will go." He further said that it seems that they are angry with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and are moving away from him.

Majority of Dalits in Bihar are illiterate

According to the report, Dalit literacy in Bihar is 55.9%, which is much lower than the national average of 66.1% for this community. They reported that approximately 62% of Dalits in Bihar are still illiterate. The report states that the situation is even more dire for the Musahar community, whose literacy rate is less than 20%, the lowest among any caste group in India.

Citing the All India Survey on Higher Education, an annual survey released by the Ministry of Education, the report states that despite constituting 19.65% of the population and 17% constitutional reservation, only 5.6% of teachers and students are Dalits.

Only 1.3% of Dalits are in government jobs

The report states that approximately 63.4% of Dalits are non-laborers, mostly women and youth. Among those who work, 46% get work for less than six months a year. Only 21% have year-round employment, often as landless laborers or daily wage laborers. Regarding government employment, only 1.3% of Dalits in Bihar hold government jobs.

Highest number of cases of atrocities

According to the report, between 2010 and 2022, more than 85,000 cases of atrocities against Dalits were registered in Bihar. This means that 17 such incidents against Dalits occur every single day.

Summary

The Bihar Assembly elections will be held in two phases: the first phase on November 6th and the second phase on November 11th, with the counting of votes taking place on November 14th. This election will be a direct contest between Nitish Kumar's NDA government and opposition parties including the RJD and Congress.
