Depression And Stress:  Most of the youth around the world are unhappy, troubled and depressed. A new research shows that today's youth is facing many social and personal challenges due to which they are unhappy, troubled and depressed. Research revealed that middle-aged people (usually between 40 and 60) are not as unhappy as before, that is, where earlier such mental problems used to happen with people in middle age, they are now happening at a younger age.

Now youth are currently struggling with very poor mental health. Whereas earlier this kind of stress was seen among middle-aged people.

Unhappiness is increasing among the youth

Old studies have shown that happiness takes a U-turn with age. People were quite happy when they were young, they were less happy in the middle of life and they were happy again in the later years. This showed that mid-life was the most challenging period. But a new study published in PLOS One has revealed a change in this trend.

This research is shocking as well as focuses on the need to take strict steps in this direction.

Young people are currently struggling with very poor mental health

A study conducted from 2020 to 2025 on people from 44 countries including the US and the UK found that mental health continuously improves with age. But it is the opposite among today's youth. Now cases of a lot of stress, depression and anxiety are being reported among the youth. Whereas the middle age or the elderly are facing less of such problems.

Why they are so much worried?

Experts cite many factors behind stress, depression and unhappiness among the youth.

> Spending more time on screens followed by anxiety and loneliness

> Financial pressure, recession, job insecurity and inflation

> Bitter childhood experiences like being bullied, facing any kind of insult or neglect or any kind of problem in the family

>Decline in education, employment and mental health after Covid 19

This research also included the tendency to fall ill since the pandemic. Along with this, the impact on society due to fear, anxiety and suicidal thoughts among the youth was also mentioned.

Poor mental health among youth leads to:

-Slow treatment (i.e. slow recovery from any condition due to mental stress can increase the burden on hospitals and society) and more patients admitted to hospitals

-Increasing suicide rates, especially among adolescents and young adults

-Low school attendance and difficulty in learning skills

-Low productivity, rising unemployment and reduction in labour force (this means that people's decreasing interest in jobs or work due to various types of challenges can become a challenge for the workplace which is a threat to the economic progress of the country.

Summary

The deepening crisis on the mental health of youth indicates that the government and agencies need to adopt policies related to working for mental health in schools, colleges and workplaces and improve the fear of financial stress (i.e. stress related to money, job or any kind of money) and job insecurity among the young population.
