Friday, in a telephone conversation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and
Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the Ukraine conflict and the recent
Wagner mutiny.

Prime Minister Modi had expressed support for what the Kremlin described
as the Russian leadership’s decisive response to the Wagner mercenary group’s
mutiny last Saturday.

Less than a week has passed since the Russian leadership thwarted a
significant coup d’état led by Yevgeny Prigozhin’s private mercenary army
Wagner Group. The telephone conversation between the two heads of state occurs
shortly after.

The private mercenary army conquered two key cities in southern Russia but halted its march on Moscow after the Kremlin reached an agreement with
Prigozhin with the assistance of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko.

Later, Prigozhin denied intending to overthrow the Russian government in
a Telegram video message. He stated that the purpose of the march was justice.
The West predicts that Putin is no longer ‘invincible’ in the wake of the
revolt.

Bloomberg reported that the Russian president took action against senior
actors suspected of supporting the 24-hour Wagner uprising. A notable general
was detained for questioning.

Opponents of Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu within the security services
intensified internal demands for his ouster. For months, Prigozhin had publicly
attacked Shoigu, a longstanding ally of Putin’s, over the failure of the
invasion of Ukraine.

Putin spent the week attempting to reassure key constituencies through
televised public events involving the military, the business community, and
other organisations. While polls indicated his public support remained robust,
government and business elites began to question his authority.
