According to the Open Doors Report, Indians continue to rank the United States as their top option for higher education, even with visa issues.

The number of Indian students enrolled in US universities increased by 35% in the 2022–2023 academic year, to a record 268,923.

The US Embassy and Consulates in India issued a record-breaking number of student visas between June and August of 2023, which is normally the student visa season. Consular personnel in India issued 95,269 visas under the F, M, and J classifications. This represents a surge increase of 18% over the same period.

Indian students enrolled in US increased by 63%

The report also shows that, compared to the previous year, the number of Indian students studying in the US for higher education soared by 63% to 165,936 students, an increase of nearly 64,000 students.

For the first time since 2009–10, India has overtaken China as the country from which the majority of foreign graduate students migrate to the US.

Of the more than one million international students studying in the US, more than 25% are Indian students. The number of Indian undergraduate students rose by 16% as well.

Optional practical training is a popular choice among Indians

With 69,062 applications, India leads the world in the popularity of optional practical training (OPT), a temporary work permit that helps qualified students obtain work experience. Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a 12-month work authorization granted to F-1 international students who have completed at least two semesters of full-time studies and intend to pursue employment in their fields of study in the United States.

U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti remarks

Honoring Indian students studying in the United States, U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti remarked, "You did it, India!..." Your choice of the United States and your decision to study abroad are significant investments made by you and your families. You are forging stronger ties between our nations and guiding us toward a promising future."
