Mid-Day meal mishap: A shocking incident unfolded at a government primary school in Tekulapalem village, Andhra Pradesh, where more than 15 students were rushed to the hospital after falling ill from the mid-day meal served on the school premises.

According to the students, their illness was attributed to a distressing incident during the rice cooking process—a lizard allegedly fell into the meal. Promptly informed about the situation, authorities took swift action to transfer the affected children to the hospital.

Upon reaching the hospital, Revenue Division Officer (RDO) Murali provided reassurance, stating that the situation was not critical, and no reports of vomiting among the students were received. He confirmed that all the children were on the path to recovery and would be discharged once fully recuperated.

The Headmaster of the school, while addressing the incident, stated that no evidence of a lizard was found in the cooking vessels. Despite thorough inspections, neither the school nor authorities found any signs of contamination. He emphasized the safety of everyone, highlighting that the students were all vaccinated, and there was no cause for concern.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. In October, sixteen students from a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) run school in Mumbai's Anik village fell ill after consuming a mid-day meal. Sunil Phakle, Dean of Jan Shatabdi Hospital, Chembur, reported that the students complained of vomiting and abdominal pain, leading to their admission to the pediatric ward.

Similarly, in September of the same year, approximately 50 students from a primary school in Bihar were hospitalized due to illness after consuming their mid-day meal. An official stated that the children complained of stomach aches and vomiting after allegedly consuming the meal in Dumra Block, Sitamarhi district, and were subsequently referred to Sadar Hospital. The recurring nature of such incidents raises concerns about the safety and quality of mid-day meals served in schools, prompting authorities to take preventive measures and ensure the well-being of students across the country.
